“My great-great-great-grandfather Heinrich Christopher Hertzberg bought a new carousel with horses in 1884. It has been in my family’s possession ever since. I always loved the colors of the facades, particularly the blue color. The center of the carousel consists of two parts that meet. Close up, they look like geometrical abstractions. We refer to the center as the dress.
When I was thirteen, we added two sleighs to the carousel. My father designed and constructed them. I did the decoration. On the back of each sleigh I painted a female portrait.”
