I really like people that play with expectation. Zappa followed ideas, that’s a good start. Blending experimental jazz, doo-wop, blue, and musique concrète tells me that he wasn’t driven by commercial success. In truth I am a bit young to have seen Zappa ‘arrive’, but I see his influence everywhere. Often, I think without the influenced artist being aware.
