Float, an exhibition of works by Derrick Adams, opens at the Vigo Gallery in London on November 18 and will run through December 17, 2016.
The show, which is composed primarily of large-scale works on paper, explores the position of Black America within contemporary culture and entertainment, framing its investigations against the history and perseverance of its people. Adams adopts a darkly humorous lens in depicting the joys and experiences of the African-American diaspora while commenting on nationalism and heritage in the 21st century. Derrick Adams, whose multi-disciplinary art often focuses on the outward projection of self-image, is a graduate of Columbia University and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Birmingham Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
