About the artist

Moffat Takadiwa CV

Moffat Takadiwa was born in Karoi , Zimbabwe in 1983 and lives and works in Harare, Zimbabwe and represents the “born free” (post-independence) generation of Zimbabwean artists. He trained at Harare Polytechnic Fine Arts Department and has been practising professionally since 2006.

Takadiwa is perhaps one of the most geographically widely exhibited and collected of the “born free” (post-independence) generation of artists in Zimbabwe. Having exhibited in all the major institutions in Zimbabwe including the National Gallery of Zimbabwe in Harare and Bulawayo over the past several years he has been steadily engaging international attention, with exhibitions in Bangkok, Paris, Amsterdam, New York, London, Berlin and Johannes burg.

He is one of the founders and former co-director (2010-2013) of First Floor Gallery Harare, Zimbabwe's first independent international, emerging contemporary artist run gallery and educational space.

Takadiwa practice over the past several years evolved to elevate and abstract found object practice to engage with issues of cultural identity, spirituality as well as social practice and the environment. Some of his important body of work today, is Africa Unreachable (Try Asia), speaks potently to the cultural dominance exercised by consumption of foreign products in Zimbabwe and across Africa. While charging our attention visually with unmistakeably African installations, these object paintings, serve equally to sensitise us to excess and despair implicit in our daily usages. To some extend Takadiwa’s work is a package of oral evidence which celebrate Zimbabwe’s resilience in times of tribulations.

Takadiwa represented First Floor Gallery Harare at the Kustvlaai Festival of Independents in Amsterdam, 2012 and represented First Floor Gallery Harare at the inaugural edition of 1:54 Contemporary African Art in London in October 2013 and the 2nd edition of 2014.
